Frequently asked questions

What are the personal services income (PSI) rules?

They apply when most of the income from a contract is a reward for your own personal skills or effort. If they apply and you're not running a personal services business, the income is generally taxed as yours personally and some deductions are limited, even if you earn it through a company or trust. We'll work out whether they apply to you.

Should I operate through a company or trust?

It can help with asset protection, flexibility and tax, but the PSI rules may limit the tax benefits for some consultants. We'll compare the options using your numbers before you change anything.

I take money out of my company. Is that a problem?

It can be. Money taken out of a company needs to be handled as wages, dividends or a properly documented loan, or it can be taxed as an unfranked dividend under Division 7A. We'll help you set it up properly.

Do you work with firms that have partners?

Yes. We prepare partnership, trust and company returns, advise on how profits are distributed, and help growing firms with reporting and planning.
