Company & trust setup

Company and trust setup

The right structure from the start.

The structure you choose affects how much tax you pay, how well your assets are protected and how easily you can bring in partners or sell down the track. Changing it later can be costly, so it pays to get it right at the start.

We'll talk through your plans, recommend the structure that suits you and take care of setting it up, from company registration to tax and GST registrations.

We work with clients across Melbourne from our offices in Mount Waverley, Port Melbourne and North Melbourne.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a company and a trust?

A company is a separate legal entity that pays tax in its own right and is owned by its shareholders. A trust is an arrangement where a trustee holds assets for beneficiaries, and is often used to distribute income across a family group. Each has different tax, asset protection and running costs, and we'll explain which suits you.

Do I need a corporate trustee for my trust?

Not always, but a company acting as trustee is often recommended for asset protection and easier administration. We'll talk through the pros and cons for your situation.

What registrations will my new business need?

Usually an ABN, a tax file number for the company or trust, and GST registration if you reach the threshold or choose to register. Every company director also needs a director ID. We'll make sure nothing is missed.

Can you change my existing structure?

Yes. We can review your current setup and help you restructure, taking into account the tax and stamp duty costs of making the change.
